Editor:
I would like to offer a few salient points in regard to Mr. Kevin Lance’s recent “Letter to the Editor,” which detailed his tax payment experience.
First and foremost, it was the Commissioners commitment to consolidate all County offices under one roof to make it more cost-effective and less time consuming to do business in a “one-stop” shop. While we have done this, we realize that it is still a “work in progress” and adjustments/changes will have to be made.
In that vein, the Single Tax Office is run by the Scranton tax collector; not the County. We provide the office with space to organize the tax bills, process payments and handle general inquiries.
We are trying to alleviate both the long lines and the waiting for the residents. Compounding the issue, is that the local banks do not accept County tax payments. Even though it is not the County’s responsibility, we are in contact with several banks about the possibility of accepting these payments, making it easier for the people and cutting down on the traffic and waiting at the office.
The County does recognize everyone’s frustration for making payments and parking, and it is working to solve it. Please keep in mind that you do have the option to mail your tax payment to the tax collector’s office. Payments will also be accepted at any Lackawanna County branch of the Fidelity Bank.
The residents of Lackawanna County are the true owners of the Government Center and tax office, and we are doing our level best to make the experience less stressful.
Thank you.
