Penn State Master Gardeners – Roberta Cammer & Elizabeth Bradshaw – presented the Poison Prevention Program to first graders at Carbondale Elementary School and Mayfield Elementary School, reaching more than 160 students.
The Poison Prevention Program outlines: how to prevent accidental poisonings in the home, what to do if a poisoning occurs, the definition of a pest, the process of integrated pest management (IPM), and key signal words on chemicals.
A major component of the presentation is the “Mr. Yuk” sticker which alerts families to a potentially poisonous product. Mr. Yuk, a green symbol developed by the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital, displays the phone number for the National Poison Center.
National Poison Prevention Week was March 18-24. The National Poison Center’s phone number is 800-222-1222 and can be called 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
