First Friday Scranton and Lackawanna County’s Arts and Culture Department have teamed-up on a new initiative entitled Get Up! Get Out! Get Active!, which promotes health and fitness through the arts.
For the June 2nd art walk on First Friday, artists have been commissioned to design artistic Hop Scotch Boards around the downtown at the following locations: on Courthouse Square; in front of Duffy’s Accessories at 218 Linden Street; in front of the Keys on 224 Penn Avenue; and by the Afa Gallery at 514 Lackawanna Avenue. There will be bean bags at each site so that attendees of all ages and “skill levels” can hop around.
As part of the activity, the public is also invited to try out different types of dance at these spots: Bogart Court behind the 500 block of Lackawanna Avenue where Urban Grace Dance will be teaching Hip Hop; at 515 Center Street by Adezzo Café with Amy Sekol providing Zumba lessons; and along the 200 block of N. Washington Avenue in front of the Courthouse Vince Brust Studios will give ballroom dance instructions. As an added bonus, there will be a free dance zone on the 200 block of Wyoming Avenue, featuring the sounds of D.J. Jack Martin.
Also on First Friday, the Lackawanna County Office of Family and Youth Services will be sponsoring at the Lackawanna County Government Center at The Globe, 123 Wyoming Avenue, an art exhibit, entitled Seasons of our Lives, which features the art and writings of young people currently or formerly in foster care.
All activities are free and open to all age groups. For additional information, contact Maureen McGuigan, Deputy Director of Arts and Culture, at (570) 963-6590, ext. 102, or by email at [email protected].
