The crispness of the air and the hustle and bustle of people moving in downtown Scranton on December 2 – 4 provided the feel of the holiday season and the history of days gone by.
All of these elements were brought to life as the switch was turned on, lighting-up the decorations on the façade of the stately Globe store, recalling fond memories for the throng of people in attendance.
The purchase of the Globe Store was the focus of Lackawanna County Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley, with the expressed intent of creating a one-stop shop for people to do business with the government.
The decorations ceremony and the three-day Holiday Marketplace were the beginning of the structure’s “return to glory.”
“I want The Globe to be a welcoming building once again and also remind people of its past significance,” noted Commissioner O’Malley.
He also sees the building as a “community hub” to help people and companies with their business needs and generate growth in the central city core.
This was clearly evident with the festive lineup of events of the December 2 – 4 weekend.
The activities kicked-off on Friday with Christmas carols and musical selections performed by both the Scranton High Knight Rhythms and Valley View High School’s “Voices of the Valley” choirs.
Remarks and comments were offered by Commissioner O’Malley, Commissioner Laureen A. Cummings, City of Scranton representatives and members of the County bench.
Then at 5:10 PM The Globe was lit-up, adding to the aura of the night and memories of yesteryear.
Commissioner O’Malley cut the ribbon to mark both the beginning of the Lackawanna County Government Center at The Globe and the opening of the fourth annual Holiday Marketplace.
The crafts and gift fair had 140 vendors offering a variety of products to the nearly 10,000 people who stopped-by the event to shop, inspect Globe memorabilia and visit with Santa.
A decorations and lighting tradition of the past was reborn and will, along with the Marketplace, be a tradition for many years to come.
