The Holiday season is officially upon us.
The hustle and bustle of shopping, community events, elaborate decorations, and family gatherings all add to the aura this time of year. These activities are timeless in their meaning and significance.
A fond memory of days gone by will be rekindled and shine brightly for many years to come when the Lackawanna County Commissioners flick the switch to light-up The Lackawanna County Government Center at The Globe on Friday, December 2, with festivities beginning at 4:55 PM.
This action will serve as the beginning of a downtown renaissance and the County’s move into the stately structure.
The evening’s activities will kick-off with holiday selections performed by the choirs of both Scranton and Valley View High Schools. A program with brief remarks by local officials will follow.
The switch will be turned “on” at approximately 5:30 PM to illuminate The Globe.
The Scranton Chapter of UNICO National and LaFesta Italiana of Lackawanna County are donating the refreshments for the ceremony and their members will be serving the hot chocolate and cookies.
Brooke Valley will be offering horse-drawn carriage rides for $5. There will also be a visit from Santa Claus.
COLTS will be picking-up and dropping-off passengers, starting at noon, in the 100 block of Mifflin Avenue.
“The decorations are just the beginning of our plans for the building. We want to recreate the festive look that many of our residents remember, while also giving our youth a glimpse of our grand history,” explained Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley. “Our goal is to have The Globe serve as the gateway to a new beginning for the downtown and the rebirth of our central city core.”
“The holiday season is a great time of year filled with all kinds of family and community traditions. The lighting program is our part of recalling the traditions of the past with bright hope for the future,” said Commissioner Jerry Notarianni.
“Christmas is my favorite time of year. The decorations plan for The Globe will help to bring back memories for me and others of the past,” noted Commissioner Laureen A. Cummings. “This is a great way to unite our community.”
The decorations for the Wyoming Avenue side of the building include 11 trees, 16 wreaths, and 180 feet of garland, all with lights and ornaments.
The first floor window bays will be festively decorated for the season by ScrantonMade. Holiday designs will also adorn the windows on the Penn Avenue side of the building.
The annual Holiday Marketplace will be held at the Globe on December 2, 3 and 4. The times are: Friday, 5 PM – 9 PM; Saturday 11 AM – 7 PM; and Sunday 11 AM – 4 PM, featuring 140 vendors.
