Spring has definitely sprung, especially with the warm temperatures.
To capitalize on the lovely weather and vibrant colors of Spring, #scrantonlove Public Art Project will host another First Friday Scranton event on May 6, entitled May Flowers. The project celebrates the rebirth of Lackawanna County’s rich landscape of flowers and greenery.
May Flowers will feature several flower-themed activities and installations. Duffy’s Accessories, 218 Linden Street, will be featuring an exhibit by artist Caleb Eyler and beaded flowers by local Girls Scouts. Duffy’s will also be working to “flower bomb” the section west of Wyoming Avenue with yarn bombed flowers, artistic flowers and real flowers donated by the Greenhouse Project at Nay Aug. The Linden Street arch on Courthouse Square will have a flower installation designed by artist Kelly Moore and Scranton High School senior art students, National Honor Society members and Class Officers with flowers donated by Ambiance, Dillon Floral Corporation and community members.
From 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., the public is invited to help create a wheat paste mural on the side of The Leonard Theatre Building, 335 Adams Avenue, led by ScrantonMade. Wheat Paste is a gel or liquid adhesive made from wheat flour or starch and water. It has been used for thousands of years for book binding, découpage, collage, papier-mâché, and adhering paper posters and notices to walls. Wheat Paste artists around the globe are now using it to create semi-permanent murals on buildings. The paste is an adhesive that is weather resistant, but it can also be removed with a pressure washer.
People interested in creating a flower for the mural are encouraged to attend a free “Creative Meet-Up” session scheduled for Thursday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m. at The Scranton Fringe Festival Headquarters in the Ritz Building at 222 Wyoming Avenue. The meeting will educate the public about wheat flour murals and the best process for creating flowers for the mural. Information about making flowers for the mural will also be posted on the Scrantnlove May flowers Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/1716949085243098/.
Guests will also have the opportunity to create a piece that night if they are unable to create one before. The Workshop, located at 334 Adams Avenue, will be hosting a printmaking session the night of First Friday, led by print maker and graphic artist Christine Medley, where guests will have an opportunity to create a print for the mural.
The #scrantonlove Public Art Project is comprised of Lackawanna County, ScrantonMade, The Scranton Fringe Festival, First Friday Scranton, Shantytown Design, Pop Up Studio and the Afa Gallery.
